What is “The Mothman Illusion” all about? In the painting, some of the people standing and walking around have the illusion they are somewhere else going about their everyday lives. While others stare at the creature as they become caught up in their own illusion of reality. The helicopters and flying miniature air vehicles (MAV’s) appear like they are only there to observe. But are also under the power of the creatures ability. In my painting I am merely trying to suggest perhaps the reason the Mothman remains free is that it has a form of mind control, over us all.
“THE MOTHMAN ILLUSION”
“Mothman Omega” is the second part in a series of paintings I am working on. It shows the Mothman intrigued by a simple red balloon that strangely stands out in the apocalyptic world that now surrounds him! The building in the background is a real place! It is the United States Post office of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. In reality, the spot where the Mothman is standing is only a few yards away from the famous “Mothman Statue” which is without a doubt the most popular tourist attraction in the city! The paintings, “Mothman Omega” and “The Mothman Illusion” also have a fictional story about them called “The Last Illusion”. I created it to give you a more deeper understanding of what's actually going on in the paintings. Will there be a 3rd painting?.....“Maybe”.

Have I ever seen the Mothman? No, but an unusual coincidence did happen a couple of months after the festival. I took my son to our local Wal-Mart store to look at some bikes. As my wife and I talked and my son looked around I noticed a lady standing in the children's books section of the store. I had seen pictures of someone who looked like this lady in many books about the Mothman when I was researching ideas for my painting. I told my wife that I thought the lady was Linda Scarberry and she was one of the first who reported seeing the mothman. I always wanted to meet her and especially since I painted something so recently about the mothman. Finally my wife simply asked and as it turned out it was her. Linda Scarberry is a very nice lady. The type of person you would want to visit with all day. After we talked awhile and said goodbye, my wife, son, and I returned home. It was then I remembered about an overdue copy of a library book I still had out called “Mothman: Facts Behind the Legend” I looked at it and noticed towards the back of the book it said Linda seen the Mothman on November 15th 1966. Then I thought to myself well this is November. I looked over at our calendar on the wall and it showed November 15th 2006. So I met Linda Scarberry on the 40th anniversary of her own sighting.
